Good morning! I hope everyone is staying warm! We are having another week of very cold weather and I am really starting to get antsy for spring! In the meantime, Bugaboo and I are keeping busy with our new little one and patiently waiting for warmer weather! Today I want to share with you a recent project I completed that is now hanging in my studio space – a canvas fabric sampler!
A few years ago I visited my sister and we went to this adorable little fabric store that had tons of neat sewing stuff. The last time I visited her we tried to go back there, but it had since gone out of business – so sad! When I was there the first time, I picked up this cute canvas fabric sampler!
I am a fabric hoarder – I have bins and bins of fabric, both actual yardages and then just bins of swatches. As a costume designer, I am often shopping for fabrics and I end up acquiring lots of swatches. Most of these swatches are of fabrics I never purchased, I just save them in case they can be used for crafting. But I also have lots of swatches of fabrics used for shows – these have a lot of meaning for me since over the years I have worked with so many incredibly talented people. Saving the fabric swatches is a wonderful reminder of the people, experience, and the show.
I have kept the swatches from shows organized in storage baggies, but when I saw this canvas fabric sampler, I knew it would be a great way to showcase some of my favorite swatches!! Even though that cute fabric store is no more, I was excited to find the canvas sampler online at BasicGrey – until I realized it was currently out of stock (#notsponsored). Maybe it will become available again or maybe I could try making a DIY version – it doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to re-create this.
What is nice about this canvas sampler is I could sew the swatches and buttons right on to it which means I can always take them off and trade them out for something else. This would also be a great way to display some of the vintage buttons I inherited from my grandmother, or a place to display swatches from the clothes my mom made me.
Right now, though, it is the perfect place to display swatches from some of the shows I have worked on. It’s amazing how many memories a single fabric swatch can contain. I love having this hanging in my studio while I work!
It was incredibly easy to throw together. I simply chose the swatches I wanted to use and ironed them. I cut them into tiny squares that would fit inside the squares on the sampler and then futzed around coming up with a layout I liked. I then stitched them on, keeping my stitches as invisible as possible!
I love nice and quick projects and love this cute way to showcase my swatches…well, some of them at least! I think in the future if I want to showcase more swatches I may try to make a larger version of this myself. Pretty sure some Sharpie or black paint on canvas could have the same effect and I could create any design I wanted to!
