Good morning! Today I wanted to share with you the progress we’ve been making on Bugaboo’s big boy room, specifically the book nook area we are creating for him! Everything is still in progress, but I am really excited with how things are coming along! For the longest time, his room has been pretty sparse so it is fun to start personalizing his room!
I posted back in October (2014!) about my plans for his room. At that time we were getting ready to move Bugaboo from the nursery to this new bedroom and transition him from his crib to his new bed. Well, my initial plans for his room never really came to fruition and that turned out to be fine! Bugaboo is less interested in cars and trucks now (the theme I had planned on) and it was also nice to have a sparse room while he transitioned and was free to roam around his room at night for the first time!
Over the past few months, we have been gradually starting to decorate the space and make it more personal – something I have been itching to do for a while now! I created a new inspiration board subbing out the car and truck-themed items for things he is interested in now – dinosaurs and space. The big items like the dresser, curtains, and rug are staying pretty neutral. Below is the new inspiration board! Some of the items we already have, like the dinosaur sheets and ceiling solar system, and others are fun ideas I am interested in either purchasing or creating a DIY version of!
- All Solar Systems Go Curtains / 2. Star Cutout Shade / 3. Retro Reptile Throw Pillow / 4. The Land of Make Believe Map / 5. Ceiling Solar System Kit / 6. DIY Clock Makeover / 7. Blast Off Throw Pillow / 8. Dustin Dino Sheet Set / 9. Globe we already own / 10. Paleontology 101 Poster / 11. PBK Tailored Striped Rug pictured is no longer available, I found a similar Target rug on sale / 12. All Solar System Go Quilt / 13. White dresser we already own
The book nook is the first area we are really tackling and I am so excited with how it is coming together! Bugaboo has always loved reading and it is his favorite thing to do throughout the day. We are hoping this book nook is the perfect thing to keep encouraging his love for reading. He has loved having his books up on shelves and loves to organize them and sleep with some at night! We used Ikea picture ledges and a leather recliner we received from a family friend. My favorite part is the painting – The Land of Make Believe Map by artist Jaro Hess. This painting used to hang in my grandparent’s home when my mom was a little girl. They acquired the painting from a doctor’s office that was being remodeled. The painting is from the 1930s, and after a little research, I realized ours is an original. There is a character near the bottom of the painting that was originally labeled “The Wondering Jew” that was changed to “The Wondering Man” when it was reprinted later on. The painting was one of the first paintings to feature different fairytales all together and it was pre-Disney which makes it really interesting. I love the painting. It is so whimsical and adventurous, perfect for a little boy’s room!
We aren’t completely finished with the book nook. I would love to put something in the corner. I have lots of ideas, too many actually, so I am not sure which direction we will take. We have thought about painting a tree or even a mural on that entire wall. I think when the weather warms up this spring, we will tackle that project so I have plenty of time to decide. I have always wanted to paint a wall mural so this may be a great time! The other half of the room has his bed, which right now is twin mattresses on the floor, (we are waiting on the bed frame and headboard) and his dresser. He just got the fun dinosaur sheets and glow in the dark planets for Christmas, which has really made his room exciting!
I hope everyone has a nice week and I’ll be back next Monday with a Valentine’s Day DIY project!
