Good morning! So I have decided to take this week to show a geekier side of myself here on the blog and celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday with some HP crafts! Harry’s birthday is July 31st so I figured this was a great time to share these crafts with you – one today and one this friday! Yes, I love Harry Potter. I am a Gryffendor, I have brewed potions on Pottermore, I own a wand, I collect the special edition Blue-rays (only 3 to go!) and I am almost always listening to one of the books on tape – I love listening to Jim Dale read them! So you may either think I am awesome or crazy, but either way, here is the first HP craft of the week – a Harry Potter Birthday Cupcake and Treat Box. This would be great as a party favor or as a gift to a fellow fan – either way, you can’t go wrong with cupcakes and Harry Potter!
I styled the treat box to resemble the box Hagrid gave Harry’s cake in – except I decided not to sit on it! The cupcake is a delicious chocolate cake with a fresh raspberry buttercream frosting with “HP” written on it green icing. It is basically a mini version of the “sticky chocolate” cake Hagrid made Harry. The original had pink frosting and the words “Happee Birthdae Harry” on it in green icing, so this cupcake mimics the original cake!
The free printable pattern and tutorial for the treat box is below, including the Hedwig owl gift tag you can download with or without the words “Happee Birthdae Harry” – this way you can completely customize the tag with whatever words you would like! You will also find the frosting recipe I used for these delicious cupcakes – seriously, they were so yummy and everyone loved them! So join me this week for some fun celebrating the chosen one and come on back this Friday for another fun HP craft!
Supplies Needed for Harry Potter Birthday Cupcake Treat Box:
- Free printables:
- Brown or tan card stock – I used two 12×12 sheets
- Glue stick
- Hole Punch
STEP ONE: Trace the pattern onto brown card stock. Use the free printable patterns above (under Supplies Needed). Once you have the pattern cut out, trace the three pieces onto your brown card stock. Use a ruler to connect the interior fold lines.
STEP TWO: Cut out the pieces.
STEP FOUR: Glue the two box pieces together using a glue stick. I held the glued edged for several minutes to make sure the corners stay glued and didn’t start to peel up.
STEP FIVE: Put the bottom of the box together and insert the cupcake holder. It should fit snugly inside the box without needing to glue it in place.
STEP SIX: Add the owl tag. Print the free Hedgwig owl tag (found under Supplies Needed). You can print the owl tag with the words “Happee Birthdae Harry” or print the blank owl tag and fill in your own message. Punch a hole in the top and use twine to attach it to your box!
The treat box is all finished! Now, time for the best part – cupcakes! I found a great recipe for chocolate cupcakes in a FamilyCircle Cupcakes magazine I received in the mail and I used this fresh raspberry buttercream recipe to top them with. I would normally pipe the frosting on, but since these were meant to look like Hagrid made them, I just used a butter knife and spread the frosting on. If I make these again (for a different occasion) I would definitely pipe the frosting on so there is more of it – I loved how fresh and sweet it tasted! I used green gel to write “HP” on each cupcake.
These cupcakes would be delicious any time of the year; the fresh raspberry buttercream is so yummy! I’ll be back this Friday with another Harry Potter-related craft!
