Happy Halloween! My kids were over the moon with their costumes this year. My daughter loves the little black cat in the Maisy books so I knew it would be a great costume. When she saw the little cats on her dress, she started clapping and meowing – which I’ll take as a pretty good indication she liked the costume! ;)
I found the beautiful black cat fabric at our local quilt store. It is part of the Urban Zoologie collection designed by Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman. I love Ann Kelle’s designs! The little black cats are so cute and the fabric was perfect for a little Halloween dress!
I used a pattern I already owned, Simplicity 1205, and made a few alterations to it. You can see another dress I made with this same pattern here. For this cat dress, I made the front bodice piece just one piece instead of two, removing the horizontal seam that was splitting it up. I also added several layers of black and purple tulle to the sleeves and the skirt. I cut the skirt so it would be fuller and added black piping to the waistline. I knew it would be chilly out (our Halloweens are always cold and damp) so I planned on Jellybean needing to wear enough under the dress to keep her warm.
The hat was a great find from Babies “R” Us for under $5. I covered the gold ears and nose with silver glitter heat transfer material to match her dress and treat bag. Here are a couple pictures of the inside of the dress – you can see the layers of tulle!
I created a little black cat treat bag for her to carry and she loved it so much she rarely set it down! I snuck a quick picture when she set it down to look at the brown bears! You can see the tutorial and grab the free pattern for it here.
I love how her costume turned out and it is so cute to watch her get excited to wear it! :) Happy Halloween everyone!!
