Good morning! I am back today with another Mother’s Day scrapbook! This time with a tutorial to make your own. I love making small scrapbooks to give as gifts; they are personal and a lovely way to show someone how important they are. I usually buy albums and then decorate and fill them. This time I decided to make the album from scratch using tag board. I love how it turned out and I actually saved money by not buying an album. Making a scrapbook this way also lets you truly customize the size of your album!
- Free printable: Mother’s Day Book Cover and First Page
- Scrapbook paper for cover and back of book (cut 2 at 6.25″ x 10″)
- Scrapbook paper for lining the cover and back of book (cut 2 at 5.25″ x 9″)
- Tag board (cut 2 at 5.5″ x 9.25″)
- Heavy card stock paper for pages (cut as many as you want 5″ x 9″)
- Ribbon (about 18″-20″ long)
- Hole punch, scissors, ruler, glue stick
- Archival tape or photo tape
STEP 1: Cut your tag board, heavy card stock paper, and scrapbook papers to the dimensions listed above.
STEP 2: Gently fold your cover tag board 1.25″ in from the left end. You can perforate the fold line first and then fold on this line to make it cleaner. The cover of the book should fold up towards you to the left. With your hold punch, punch two holes 1.25″ from the top and bottom. Hole-punch both boards.
(The picture below shows the inside or “wrong side” of the book cover with the fold going away from you)
STEP 3: Cover the tag board with your decorative scrapbook paper. Center your boards on the paper and glue them down with your glue stick. Trim the corners and then fold over each side of the decorative paper gluing them down to the tag board.
STEP 6: Glue decorative lining pages to the back of each tagboard. This hides everything nicely and gives the book a nice clean look. On the cover of your book, you may notice the inside of the fold line can get messy. As you fold the book, the lining page will likely tear. It becomes fairly unnoticeable when the pages are in the book and it didn’t bother me. However, if you want to avoid this, you can cut your lining page for the book cover into two pieces where the fold line would be and glue them in this way. This way your cover will be able to bend without tearing the lining page.
STEP 7: Prepare your book pages. They should already be cut to 5″ x 9″. Lay one of your pages inside the front cover of your book and mark where you should fold it and where the two hole punches should go. You want the pages to be centered inside you book covers. For me I ended up folding all of my pages 1 1/8″ in from the left side.
STEP 8: Add the title page to your book. Again, you can use the free printable found above or create your own!
STEP 9: Add photos to your pages! My book has 8 pages and I used colorful card stock to back some of my photos before placing them in the book. I used archival tape to attach the photos since I always find glue sticks to make my photos bumpy.
I‘ve made my mom several small scrapbooks through the years. I chose to focus this one mostly on pictures of her with Bugaboo. I included pictures of us at the beginning and then gradually moved into my mom with Bugaboo. The book went together quickly and was a lot of fun to make!
I’ll be back next Monday with a week full of wedding posts! Yep, five straight days of wedding related posts and DIY projects. Wedding season is upon us and I felt like getting in the spirit! See you next week!
