Good morning! I hope everyone had a lovely Easter weekend! We had a lot of fun celebrating with the kids. It was a little bit dreary outside, but the snow melted and we went to our local zoo for an Easter egg hunt on Saturday! Today I have a few photos from the kids’ birthday to share with you! The party was so much fun and the kids both has a great time. Bugaboo loved the little games we played and seeing his family and friends – most traveled to come be with us for this special occasion!
The party was a Woodland Animal Book Party! My kids love books so it seemed like a great theme for this year. The party was held at my mom’s clubhouse where she lives and was perfect because it had enough tables and chairs for everyone to sit and lots of room for games! Our house is really nice for outdoor parties, but it gets a bit crowded when the weather isn’t nice enough to go outside.
I had a lot of fun getting things ready for this party! Bugaboo was old enough to start helping me a little bit and we did “craft time” together while my youngest napped. When I was working on the invitation and painting it, Bugaboo was really excited to use his watercolors and paint next to me in his coloring book! My mom and sister helped me set up the day before the party, so overall, the planning process was just as memorable as the party itself :)
The food table was a lot of fun to create! There are SO many amazing ideas on Pinterest. I had a lot of ideas, but in the end I wanted to do something that used things from around our home and was fairly simple. The only thing I purchased to create this display was 1 yard of fabric, the polka-dot balloons and the two cake stands I found in Target’s dollar section around Valentine’s Day. Everything else, even the fake flowers, came from my house!
The food for the party was inspired by ideas I found on Pinterest. I love the hedgehog cheese tray, and the veggie tray was a huge hit! We barely had any leftovers, which was great!
For dessert we had cupcakes and I made a cake for both kids. I started making hedgehog cupcakes and things started out successfully, but when things started to go awry, I switched to plain cupcakes with tree toppers! I am very proud of the cakes since I find them really challenging! Again, I had a lot of ideas, but I decided to try these ombre naked cakes since they seemed easier than frosting the whole cake. Bugaboo helped me bake both cakes (he loves to bake with me!) and then I stacked them.
Bugaboo’s cake was topped with three little hedgehog figurines for three years old, and Jellybean’s cake was topped with one little fawn, for one years old! The cakes are far from perfect, but they were made with a lot of love! I love the little bunting and twigs on top of each. My mom came up with a great idea to cut the twigs out of a grapevine wreath I had on hand and they were perfect! My sister thought I was crazy as I was making these, but she did admit they were pretty cute when she saw them on the cakes!
We had a coloring station set up with blank books for the kids to decorate and take home with them. I printed off woodland animal-themed coloring pages I found online. We played a few games, including woodland animal bingo, pass the fox (like hot potato) and musical toadstools (musical chairs). Winners of the games received little fox notepads – I’ll be sharing a tutorial for them soon!
My favorite game was this Storybook Guess Who game. Bugaboo picked out all of the characters and I made little library checkout cards for everyone to write their answers on. The one who guessed the most characters correct won a little fox notepad.
I decorated the clubhouse with books and a few woodland flower arrangements. I made two banners with photos of the kids. Jellybean’s banner showed the photos we took each month since she was born. It was fun to see how much she had grown! We filled the fireplace shelves with a bunch of Bugaboo’s favorite books – the perfect easy decoration for a book party! My husband was in charge of the playlist and found some really fun “woodland-themed” songs like “The Woods Behind My Home” and “Baby Bear” by Casper Babypants and the song “Boogie Boogie Hedgehog” which was Bugaboo’s favorite.
For party favors, guests chose bookmarks to take home with them. I made the fox and raccoon corner bookmarks and found the other free printable bookmarks online. I added ribbon and tassels to a few of them.
Overall, this party was so much fun to put together and the kids had a great time! I really loved planning the party and figuring out different ways to DIY as much of the party as possible. It was great having Bugaboo help me with little projects and it added to his excitement for the day. Below is a list of some of the resources used for the party. I’ll be sharing a few tutorials for some of the DIY projects over the next couple weeks. You can also check out last year’s Winnie the Pooh party and Bugaboo’s Monkey-themed first birthday party!
